You Know You're In Trouble When Jabberwocky Starts Making Sense

Posted by Heidi in

The Big Guy is always talking Jabberwocky, as I call it. Someone else might call it "saying things of a contradictory nature" but, hey, BORING (unless, of course, it is Sir Anthony speaking--he can say anything he wants, in my book--oh, I am a card this morning, am I not?).

For example, the other day I walked into the kitchen to see all 12 packages of the super economy size box of saltine crackers lying side by side on the counter.

“Big Guy (who is 19 going on 9), why did you take all of the crackers out of the box?”

“So I could see them.”

“Can’t you see them in the box?”

“Yes, but they are hard to get out so I took them out and put them on the counter.”

Or this gem of a conversation that occurred when I had just returned from the grocery store:

(Big Guy) “I smell something strange, juicy and delicious.”

“Is it the (still hot) rotisserie chicken?”

“No, it’s something strange and juicy that I have never smelt before. I think it’s you.”

Or: “You always never hate me as much as you used to sometimes love me. You know?”

“No. I don’t know. I can’t make heads or tails of what you just said.”

One thing he is pretty much right about--I'll love him always, sometimes, and never never.

(I was interviewed today by Andre Gensburger of the Clayton Pioneer (he wrote a book, too--go see!) What a nice guy! The article won't be out for a few weeks but I will be sure to post a link when the time comes--it's not as if you are already bored to tears with all this stuff you have already heard a million times--no siree-bob! Still, it might be fun to check it out to see whether or not I can produce a hag-free picture to go with it. Oh! And check out my friend Shirley's TWO new Regency-set historical romance Avalon books--the covers are gorgeous--I'm so jealous!)

Jabberwocky...I like that word. I'll use that next time my kids say something that doesn't make sense, which should be in, oh, the next 10 minutes or so.

Congrats on the article interview--can't wait to read it!

What a hoot!

Can't wait to read the article! Heck, can't wait to read the book!

Love the juicy and delicious comment. Did you sleep with one eye open and a necklace of garlic that night?

Kristina, yeah, well, my 19 year old is even more special than that. He is multiply disabled so . ..Erin, sure, the little ones say cute goofy things but if you get a 19 year old who talks like that, let me know! Becky--thanks, but probably boring, like I said. Kim--hey, you aren't going to buy one are you? Not at that price! (it's because she's in Canada, people) I can bring one to you when we are both in Utah. Jami--bwaahhaaaa!! You have seen the Big Guy so you know how scary that comment was, huh?

Okay, should I admit that I understood some of that? Hey, I checked out Shirley's website. Fabo! I'm always looking for a great new book to read and I totally trust your judgement. Only someone with such good taste in literature can produce a book like Miss D.

The next time I smell something strange, juicy, and delicious, I'll look around for you.

You really ARE a card this morning!

Those are some terrific quotes. Thanks for sharing them as they are hilarious AND they give us more of a feel for the Big Guy.

Love the love comment. What a cutie.

Baby G hasn't started talking yet, but I'm pretty sure his first sentence will sound something like, "No Mama. Dada now!" But he gives me big ole slobber kisses like he thinks I'm juicy and delicious so I guess I'll take that!

"You always never hate me as much as you used to sometimes love me. You know?"

Dude, my lil' dudes say stuff like that ALL THE TIME! (You know 'bout my lil' dudes.) It's a maze to get back to the original meaning. So we play the "guessing game" where I suggest words and they tell me if that's the right thing that they meant. It's improved our vocabulary!

Of course, it doesn't help that they actually created their own twin language (twinglish) and can exclude me on a whim. I once thought I figured out a word and they were so excited. They started jabbering like mad until they realized what a phony I am. =P

Big Guy has a huge heart and spirit, doesn't he? I like how you call his reasoning Jabberwocky. That's a perfect term for it.

I loved the things your son said. They sound like a treasure to me and each one made me smile.

Congats on the article as well. I am pretty sure no one is bored by hearing about you getting more and more famous! Your success just makes it sound even better when we tell people we know you.(virtually speaking, of course) So the more famous you become the cooler I sound when I mention your name. Keep it up!

Oh how I love the loving always sometimes never but never never conversations. At least I think that's what it was...

February 26, 2009 at 3:55 PM

Julie--thanks for checking it out! Pam, rumor has it you won't be sorry! Lisa--I love being a card. Melanie--you are juicy and delicious. Or so the rumor goes. Laura--you rock! Cindy--he has a huge everything but yes, he does have a huge heart and spirit--thanks for noticing. Joy--oh yeah, you are so cool by association (not!) It's just a local paper but the thing is about papers is that an article in just a small one can be picked up by state or national paper so . . . Heather, you know, that is one of the best things about the Big Guy is that a lot of that stuff that is so fun when they are little but goes away, hasn't gone away. He makes me laugh every single day.

Strange, juicy and delicious. Sounds like a good tag line for a new cologne.

I like the Big Guy.

February 26, 2009 at 5:21 PM

Kids...gotta love 'em. It's really cute that he pays you a compliment like that. I'm sure he keeps things interesting at your place.

Congratz on the interview.

I laughed at Jami's comment. And I agree with Lara. I like your Big Guy too. And then I got a little misty. You get to me sometimes, really. I have become a special ed junkie.

February 26, 2009 at 7:49 PM

That is brillig! ermmm... as long as brillig means funny and brilliant...

February 26, 2009 at 9:21 PM

Jabberwocky makes perfect sense and no sense at the same time. A perfect term to describe those conversations with your son. Those conversations are so interesting. I would get a kick out of them. Just because life is funny that way.

February 27, 2009 at 10:21 AM

Oh, that struck a cord for some reason. How touching. I want to hug your big guy now for all the love you always never sometimes gave him.

I didn't realize that the oftener you love someone, the more juicy and delicious you smell.

How cute.

And congrats on your interview!!
