Sometimes, er Often I Feel Like Mistakes Follow Me Around Just Waiting For Their Turn

Posted by Heidi in

I’ve been losing my marbles for quite a while, now. At first, it was just one marble at a time. Lately it’s been more of the cascade effect. It means that I am very often confused, bemused and just plain wrong about things.

In case you were wondering, being wrong is humiliating. I should know. Oh, boy, should I!! However, being allowed to remain wrong, in my opinion, is even worse. So, should you see a big mistake, please let me know. It won’t hurt my feelings to be told that I used the word garbage instead of garage (‘twould be a total Freudian Slip if I did) (and I have) or that something I wrote is totally unintelligible. Yep—I want to know so I can fix it.

In light of the above, I must make a confession. I revealed that I was the author of a Certain Story on a Certain Website. I wasn’t supposed to do that! (oops!) It is now possible to go to a Certain Website and vote for Certain Stories but I am kind of in the soup because I made that boo-boo.

To avert disaster (of the hot soup variety—I don’t want to end up in the bowl of some freezing-cold, starving person’s spoon!) please go to the site in question and read all the truly scrumptious Christmas stories. You can now officially vote for the story (or stories—you are allowed two votes in each category, those written by published authors and those that aren’t) by using the anonymous poll (rather than just saying “I vote for this one” in the comments). If you know which one is my story, please don’t vote for mine just because you know me. And like me. Even lurve me. I like my story very much but there are far better posted on this site so please vote accordingly (hey, ldspublisher, are we good yet? Cuz it's really getting hot in here!)

Are you kidding? I make so many mistakes daily it would be impossible to pick just one! But I will, I speak too often without thinking. It's one of my charms.
I say something and then an hour later, I'm like "Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh."
But the worst, is when I try to fix it. I should know better - I know!

For instance, one year, we delivered gifts to Billy's boss and wife. She mentioned that Billy's hair wasn't as bright red looking as it usually was, it looked darker.
Me. Not even thinking! Replied:
"Yeah, it gets darker when he hasn't washed it in awhile."
Billy gave me a DARK look.
I was like "Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh."
So then, I try to fix it:
"Well, not that he hasn't had a shower in awhile, he just doesn't like to use shampoo!"
"Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh."
Yeah.
Not cool.

My whole life is a lesson in mistakes.
I still think you are cool!

Abra--my dad loves to shower, does it every day, but he doesn't shampoo his hair every day because then it won't lie flat. I commiserate with Billy and esp. you because obviously, I know just how you feel. I hate it when I put my foot in my mouth, mostly because I don't like the taste of toe jam. Sabrina--you are so sweet--how did I get such sweetie-pie blog commentors?

I feel that if ldspublisher was mad at you before, they should forgive you now. You are very impressive at ammends making.

December 16, 2008 at 10:33 AM

Yu mak mistaks?! That's wierd, caus I nevr do.

December 16, 2008 at 10:44 AM

Its getting hot in here....

There's that song thing with me again. I can't hear that phrase without thinking of that song. :)

AND it sounds like you could use a Jeeves in your life, to keep track of your blunders and smooth over the resulting bumps. :)

I make mistakes daily, I just hate admitting it!

December 16, 2008 at 11:44 AM

Barb--why thank you! (I do so hope ldspublisher isn't mad at me but if "they" are, I'm glad you think my post was helpful!)Alyson--funnnny funnie gril! Heather---yes! Yes! I so want my own Jeeves! That would be perfect! (I *am* getting the Jeeves alarm clock for Christmas. This I know because I am the one who ordered it. The Spouse gave up trying to surprise me years ago, like, when we were in high school. If only I had known then what a detriment it would be later on to never let him get one past me!)Kelline--it is hard, isn't it? But I have gotten to the point where I fear I look more like an idiot by NOT admitting it. Things have come to a real pretty pass around here!

Well, what if your story really is the best? I guess I'll just have to vote for it!

December 16, 2008 at 12:14 PM

Whew, I'm glad I didn't leave a comment on their blog page, only on yours! But it was good writing.

December 16, 2008 at 12:33 PM

Don't worry, I voted for you anyway. My life reads like a long list of mistakes made.

December 16, 2008 at 1:01 PM

Kristina, if you think my story is the best, then you have the wrong gal. But thanks for your optimism (and your comment!)(Yah, you know what I'm talking 'bout!) Erin, thank you! It might be good (or okay) writing but it doesn't have the "tear" factor. I forgot my audience when I submitted that. My criteria at the time was: what do I have already written on the subject of Christmas that I could jet over there? Not a strategy aimed for success. Becky, thanks! And you voted for the Dickens story, too, I saw. That was so fascinating, wasn't it?

you make mistakes? well, I am not sure I can continue to come here and read then... I only associate with the perfect..... probably explains why I am so lonely LOL!

December 16, 2008 at 2:30 PM

Mistakes keep us in check I guess. There must be some reason they happen so frequently. I have learned to laugh pretty hard at mine, anyway.

Good luck to your story!

December 16, 2008 at 2:35 PM

Will go and do, as requested!

And excellent job of falling on the sword. They should be more than placated by now, darling.

Stacey--you don't even know how to punctuate your name correctly! (hrumph!) Kazzy--I'll bet you have the richest throatiest laugh on earth. Next time you do a song on your blog, I would love to hear you say something in your speaking voice. Luisa, you make me sound so noble. And I quite like it!

Christmasy - nice.

December 17, 2008 at 3:36 AM

Awww dangit. I hate it when I do stuff like that. But I completely missed your original post, so when I go read and vote, it'll all be on the up and up.

December 17, 2008 at 5:24 AM

Christine--thanks, cuz! Stacey--yep, I pulled the post that revealed the truth of all things so that's good.

December 17, 2008 at 7:09 AM

Oops, sorry Randi! It's still early . . .

December 17, 2008 at 7:09 AM

Whoops! There's nothing like saying the wrong thing to make you wish steamrollers didn't travel very fast and are therefore easily stopped. It only adds insult to injury when you say the wrong thing and jump in front of a steamroller, only to have the guy driving it yell curses at you and insinuate you have canine ancestry. Then you realize the steamroller is completely stopped several yards in front of you in nearly the same location it was in before you jumped in front of it, and people are looking at you like you're some kind of idiot. Because you are.

I like soup, though. Especially with grilled cheese sandwiches.
